Frequently Asked Questions

What is a chiropractor?

The term chiropractor was coined from two Greek words:  Cheiros - meaning hand, and Praktos - done by.  Chiropractors locate and correct spinal misalignment using predominantly manual techniques.  This prevents nervous system interfernces and helps to restore the body's own healing ability.  Osteopaths work more with the circulatory system.

Will the treatment hurt?
Spinal mobilisation techniques when done properly rarely hurt.  If the spine has been restricted or out of alignment for some time there may be some initial discomfort but this should settle down within twenty four hours.  This is the process of the spine adapting to the new range of mobility that has developed.

Can I be treated if I am in a lot of pain or my back is in spasm?
Certainly.  Treatment is modified to suit the individual and every effort is made to alleviate pain using gentle techniques where necessary.  Massage, Ultrasound and Interferential therapy can be helpful in these circumstances.  The quicker you seek treatment, the quicker you get better.

What is the 'popping' or 'cracking' sound that can be sometimes heard with a Chiropractic adjustment?
It indicates that the joint has seperated slightly, releasing the normal fluids and gasses in the joint.  This indicates that there has been a change in pressure in the joint, somewhat like the popping sound that occurs when you uncork a bottle of wine.

Do I have to have my back 'cracked'?
Occassionaly someone can be uncomfortable with a spinal adjustment that causes an audible release.  In these circumstances there are other low impact, muscular adjustments that can be used.  The treatment will be as effective but it may take a little while longer to work.

How often do I need to come for treatment?
This is specific to the needs of the individual.  A routine course of care may be four to six treatments over a one month period.  There is regular reassessment of treatment progress.  This is not a hard sell or a multi-treatment practise.

Will I need X-Rays?
Diagnosis and treatment can be done without the routine need for X-Rays.  In some instances referral to your GP or an X-ray imaging facility may be considered.

What is the difference between a Chiropractor and an Osteopath?
There are differences in approach and technique.  Chiropractors locate, correct and prevent nerve system interferences, usually by adjusting the spine.  this helps to restore the body's own healing ability, allowing it to function better.  Osteopaths work more with the circulatory system.

Is there any regulation of Chiropractors?
In common with medical practitioners and dentists, all Chiropractors are registered by law under the 1994 Chiropractors' Act.  The profession is statutarily regulated through the Genereal Chiropractic Council (GCC) and it is illegal to practise as a chiropractor without being registered with the GCC.
